Pegs, Pigs & More Pegs

I think we both have to say that getting the dirt bike/motorcycle has been one of the best things we could have possibly done for our lives as vandwellers. We can jump on at any time and hop over to the grocery store, get out of camp for a bit, experience a change of scenery, whatever we want and we don't have to move the van...its been great for the mind, body, soul & our gas budget!

Jamie has always had bikes, he grew up on them and as he has gotten older has kept his love for motorcycles alive. Before our journey began, back in 2012, we sold our 2003 Harley Davidson V-rod to help along with the funds for the beginnings of our new life....and oh what a beautiful bike.....

We sold the V-rod knowing it wouldn't be the most practical bike in our new lives and we also knew that another bike would be in our future. We've been looking at dirt bikes for a few years and while we were in San Carlos this Summer, we found one...or maybe it found us! One of Jamie's longtime friends had this bike, it was in great condition, & had barely been ridden, so J' worked, paid it off, and then worked on it to make it street legal as well as a few personal touches.

Our new bike is a Honda XR-400

Along with the street legal kit; hi/lo beam headlight, brake light, license plate light, turn signals, horn, rear view mirror, Jamie switched the 2.5 gallon gas tank for a 4 gallon gas tank (cost $23.50 on ebay) and put passenger (foot) pegs on for me. We started with these foot pegs (cost: $10 amazon)

We knew when we opened the box that we would need better ones soon, but these were something to get us by, so I could come along for the ride. Once we were back on the road, I rode along about two times before one of the pegs fell off, so we ordered Rescue Pegs (cost: $68), they attach onto the existing foot pegs...like an extension.

 I really like the Rescue Pegs. I am 5'7 with pretty long legs, and with these pegs my feet/legs are able to rest lower & be more at ease, plus it's nice to sit comfortably on the back of the bike. The more we rode the bike together, the more Jamie figured out they were in his way at times; starting the bike, at stoplights, etc. And if ya'll know him, you know he's always keeping his research fresh, so the passenger pegs he wanted for the long haul were already on his wish list!

One day last week we went to town to run errands, our first stop was the laundromat. As we were turning into the plaza, the police officer behind us turned his lights on and stopped us in the parking lot. What was the reason he had pulled us over? We were waiting to hear what it was too, because we know we are current & legal on everything, 'cause that's how we roll. First, he asked us about our foot peg situation and after we told him all about it he said, "Hmm, I'll have to check if that's legal." #2- He said we did not have a rear view mirror but we do, he just couldn't see it. So that was a no-go. #3- He said we didn't have a license plate light...but we do it's just harder to see in the daylight.
No-go. #4- He didn't like where our license plate was attached and told us we needed to get a bracket and put it on the side or on the back where it can hang down...he thought that was his "go"...but it wasn't! We stood by the bike while he ran both of our I.D.'s along with the bike and even checked into the foot peg statute. When he came back over to us he said he wasn't going to give us a ticket but he was going to give us a repair order to get safer passenger pegs for me...and for Jamie.

We were given 5 days to get the "right" passenger pegs plus have them installed, before a citation would be issued... so either way he gave us a ticket!!

 Later that day when we got back to the van, Jamie got online and ordered his wish list foot pegs, costing us $137.76, almost $40 bucks of that went to shipping because we had to overnight them.

They arrived the next day, earlier than we expected, so we went and picked them up and then headed over to a local welding shop, http://www.thepropellercompany.com/ where Presley welded on our new passenger pegs. (cost $50) We thought that was a little steep but it seems to be a good price around here.

After that hit to the wallet, we had to go to the police station to have an officer sign off on the "fix-it ticket". Funny enough the same officer that gave us the ticket was the one to come out to sign us off...it was comical and made the whole experience complete! All in all, in the end, everyone was happy, he was happy we got it done so quickly and we were happy that we got the pegs we truly wanted...could have done with different timing for the bill, but now it's done and we won't have to worry about getting pulled over for something so silly.

 Now that we've had them on the bike for a week, Jamie loves them & I'm still getting used to them. As you can see in the pictures they sit much higher than the Rescue Pegs, so the first couple of days I felt like my knees were hanging out by my ears...but I'm slowly getting used to the feel of them and in the long run it will be safer for both of us.

I guess the next best thing will be getting my own bike.......right!?

Off like a Herd of Turtles

We've been boppin' around so much lately that I don't even have time to keep up with myself these days! I'm going to have one heck of a time backtracking sooo I'll do a quick "Wedgie" to catch everyone up so I can write some posts about other things...other than our dailies!

One morning, I was sitting in our camp gazing at our awesome view, looked over and I saw the cactus next to me had a perfect heart "paddle". It indeed made my day and made me realize you can find love anywhere...even in some "dangerous" places...i.e. my cactus!

We (my tribe and Camp Mellow, Bryce) left Sedona and headed toward the Flagstaff area. It had just turned too hot all of a sudden, sitting anywhere but in A.C. was exhausting...and that rarely happens. We had heard that Bob and some others were out toward Williams so we headed that direction.

We ended up on some really nice, quiet public land and only about 3 miles from town. Williams has Historic Route 66 going through it so there's tons of cute shops, restaurants and things to look at!

While we were so close to town, Bryce was a sweetheart and let me borrow his bike so J' & I could ride into town together...but not before J' tried it on his own...and then made a basket for the Nana Bug to come too! Did I mention our dog is spoiled rotten?

J' took one of our milk crates with some nuts & bolts and bolted down the milk crate onto the bike rack, then Savannah has a carabiner connecting to her harness to keep her inside the crate. The first attempt was a little wobbly because she didn't know what was going on and she wasn't locked in tight enough, but after getting used to the bumpy roads, she rode like a champ! Now we all get to ride into town as a family.....awwwwwwww.

We had a ton of fun riding in and around town together. It was nice doing something like that with all of us...one bike doesn't do much for a family of three! Thanks to the B-man for letting me take his cool new bike, it was hella fun...I felt like a kid again!

Logged. Another Great Day in the Books!

Woke up this morning to Savannah going a little buck wild looking out of my side window, when I finally saw what she had 'window hunted' all I could do was giggle and get my camera!

What started out as two little mice at the top of this bush ended up with one in the bush and one on the ground. We watched & giggled in amazement that one- the bush could hold the fat lil thing and two- he/she was putting themselves in an open invitation position (not hiding from predators). We were also surprised the food we did have outside had not been gone through or chewed through by the little critters. They were so stinkin' cute! A good way to start this busy busy day of ours...today would be laundry day, among other things. Now, for the average Joe, or Josephine, this would not really be a daunting task and usually, even for me, it is something I thrive on and like to do...but today...oh today would be so different! With the weather always changing, meaning not having to wear the same Summer/Winter clothes, and now having an extra set of sheets and pillow cases there hasn't been a major need to go to the laundromat...so we haven't... for two months! We have been soaking and washing the essentials in the 3 1/2 gallon bucket and line drying them to get us by until "The Big Wash". I definitely had my work cut out for me today, BUT we found a great, very clean laundromat right next to Safeway and there was only one other person there...score! J' helped pull all of our stuff out, bags inside, bags up-top, every single little thing was going to get washed today, even our canvas tarp was going to get a full cycle! I started sorting and mushing clothes into the front load dryers, which are really great because they hold way more and use less soap. The front loaders are a little bit more expensive but they do a really nice job and get everything really clean. As I did all of the inside work on the laundry, J' started the stuff in the van: fresh water, fresh ice, empty the cooler, clean the cooler (another one of those pizza crusts exploded in the cooler and was stopping up the plug, ewww), refill the cooler...lots of cooler time! Even though there was a ton of stuff to wash, dry and then fold and put away it went pretty fast, I'd say the whole process took us a little over two hours. Team work at its best baby! J' brought in our duffle bags, as well as our backpacks, so the clothes would be put away on site, (he knows me too well, I do not like doing this later). Everything smells so good and feels so soft....awww, the little things!! The other great thing about this place and the front loaders is, with all of our laundry we only spent about 17-18 bucks! Just to give you an idea, I did roughly 6 small loads of laundry in Lake Havasu for $35.00...not a ganga! Today I did, (hard to say with the front loaders but...) anywhere from 10-13 loads. I had 6 machines to wash and about the same to dry all for about $18.00...now that's a ganga!!

All wrapped up at the laundromat and Safeway we hit up a couple more places: Dollar Tree, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Wal-mart, gas station, and Little Caesars. 

We feel like millionaires of life right now! Everything got done in one day, everything went super smooth and it was still light when we got home to re-set camp. What a great day! My babaa' even got me a surprise...this is how you know your hubby really listens and that I'm not like every other girl...

 I'm always clipping things and trying to tack down stuff... and I make a lot of forts but never have the "clip power" to keep what I make together, especially in this wind. When he came out of O'Reilly he said, "I got you a surprise." I said, "From the automotive store...stickers??" He handed me a bag and as I peeked inside I shrieked with excitement and tons and tons of giggles. What a sweetie! And now what do I yearn for...yep, MORE clips! haha

It's great being so close to town because even though it took most of our day, we didn't have to stay overnight in a Wal-mart parking lot to finish up our stuff the next day (like we did going to Fresno from Shaver Lake). We got everything done and now back at camp and ready to take on whatever comes our way. Even Savannah is completely satisfied, her bedding (from her gifted bed from Mikey), her blankies and her "babies" all got washed AND we found her favorite food at the store...spoiled yes, but oh so content!!

As the Pizza Turns

It's been nice being "back". Our spot really does feel right for us, right now. We are picking up where we left off having our cafe' convo's in the a.m. with Mike, making breakfast, shooting the shizz for a few hours and then going about our day. We took a trip into the town of Cottonwood yesterday to stock up and get a shower. We walked around and saw parts of the little town that we hadn't seen before...such a cute little downtown area!

We had picked up some Pillsbury pizza crust at the store in one of those poppable aluminum containers and figured we would make pizza for dinner...somehow! I thought we would spread the dough out in our Orgreenic pan but J' had other plans for that, instead he spread the crust out over the grill (good thing the grill is clean!)...okay, let's see how this goes!

I'd say it came out purty darn good for not knowing what the heck we were doing! We all got a "slice" of pizza that could have fed an army of dinosaurs but saving something like that for later wasn't in the cards so there were a lot of deep breaths and maybe even some pants getting unbuttoned! We put a whole new spin on Grilled Garlic Chicken Pizza...we may have to try it again.

Simply Sedona

Camping within another camp has been fun, it's not something we usually do...think it was about time to try something new! Ray knows the area pretty well so his "main objective" of the day was to short tour us around Sedona and Cottonwood. We had an amazing day! We are staying right about in the middle of towns between Cottonwood and Sedona... about 7 miles in each direction from camp...pretty awesome! We drove into Downtown Cottonwood and walked up and down the main street with the dogs, stopping at the cutest little antique store to sit outside in the gorgeous breeze of the day and catch up on a wooden bench outside.

After a while, we walked back to the truck and took a 'road' tour of where the stores were, where to get water, and a couple of places to take a shower. After touring Cottonwood, we simply drove to Sedona taking in all of the wonder of the Red Rocks. What a place!!

Ray has a State Park pass (I think that's what it is) so we drove right into one of the parks around here. I think he said it was $9.00 a day or $40...er, maybe $60...? for a year...and I might be making all of that up, so...anyway we parked and walked about 25 yards and we were in this beautiful green field with a pretty sweet view!

 We walked down the trail about a 1/4 of a mile and there is a river running through the trees and rocks, it's just absolutely awesome.

 There are places all throughout the trail where people have stacked rocks upon other rocks, I guess it has something to do with the magnetic pulls and vortexes in the area...there were some pretty amazing stacks! After passing all of the rocks, the trail curves a little and then opens up into this beautiful movie-like scene of the river, lush neon green trees and the most ridiculous red rocks towering over the river. It's one of the most magical things I've seen in a very long time. We let the dogs loose and Storm swam and fetched sticks and went to his own "private island" on the other side of the river, Savannah stuck close to us and swam a little bit until she got too cold then would go roll in the sand!  We all had a great time, here are just a few pics so you can try to get a feel of what it was like there....absolutely wonderful!

What a great afternoon...for all of us! The pups will surely sleep good tonight. After drying the pups and ourselves we piled back into the truck and drove down the road through Sedona. Sedona is a lovely little town and the views are breathtaking everywhere you go, even sitting at a stoplight is jaw dropping. We stopped in at a little shopping area called Tlaquepaque Village. We had dinner at a Mexican joint with some pretty badass burritos and walked the park around the back of the property. Let me tell you, if I was having any kind of yearning for lush grass and big huge canopy trees...I got my fill at this little park! Simply gorgeous.

Today we got our feet wet in the sands of Sedona...now I'm super stoked to fully submerge ourselves into this majestic little town. It's going to be a lot of fun camping here, I can just feel it!

Can you believe that we are still in Wickenburg!

I'm not really that surprised. This place has really been great. The weather is just about perfect...it's getting a little warmer but it's great with the breezes that we get and showers are sooo refreshing! We both are getting some nice color, something we haven't had in a while...Love the Vitamin D! We re-positioned Joon about a week into our stay, we weren't getting full sun on the solar panels and had to start the van to make coffee in the morning. Easy fix...turn around! It wasn't causing too much of a problem but why get half the sun if you can get alllllll of it!?

So the day we went into town to get more ice and water, oh ...and 2 whoppers for $5 bucks at Burger King, don't want to forget that...we came back and just tweaked the position of the van and BAM! we're back in business with more power than we use. Another thing we really like and enjoy is the town is only about 5-6 miles from our camp spot, so it's nice and easy to go to town. When we were in Shaver Lake we had to go shopping once a month...for everything...for a month! Fresno was about 55 miles away, which had the closest Wal-marts and gas, it was interesting... this makes it easier on the van and on the gas tank as well.  When we went into Wickenburg, we went to a thrift store we found on Yelp.com and it was great. The name of the place is Soroptimist, they have 3 different buildings; Building 1 was full of clothing, shoes, accessories, etc for men and women and is decorated so cute in there. Building 2 is mostly books and other things and Building-ish 3 is outdoor stuff like sports equipment, recreational hobbies, lawn stuff, luggage, chairs, pots, all kinds of stuff. It was great, a definite good find! We have a "Looksie List" for thrift shops and were able to mark off two of the items...Books and a fitted sheet! We got 6 books and the fitted sheet all for $4.00! What a ganga! When I was looking at the sheet the next day I saw that it was Ralph Lauren, so hopefully it'l last for a while.

Let's see, what else... Savannah is doing better on the walks, it only took about 4 days for her to learn not to go off the trail or she'd have 4+ cholla in her feet, butt, face and tail! And those little pink booties lasted like two days, go figure. There's not much traffic up here, I mean there's your occasional jeep due to a one man jeep tour company (hee hee) but we are a whole minute out of his whole tour, so we just wave and they pass and that's it. When we first got here, we had a few ATV's and a couple of dirt bikes but they're just passing through. It's been pretty peaceful and you just can't beat the view...it's spectacular. We caught a full moon last night and it was just gorgeous. I really wish I could have found my camera the night before last because the moon had risen about an hour and a half earlier, when it was still light out and the colors in the sky were just to die for. I did capture some pictures of the moon last night but it was already dark and I would love to have a 'better' camera to truly capture the moment as we see it, but I'm glad I can get what I can for now!

The 9-5...Our Way

Woke up again this morning at 6 a.m. Happened yesterday, too. Yesterday I read a chapter in a new book I'm reading and fell back asleep. Today, I figured I'd do the same and I did, however I did not fall back to sleep. Instead, I got up quietly, sat in the passenger seat and did my meditation session. I'm on day 3 of the 21-day course...still doing it. By 8 a.m. I took Savannah on a walk across the lot, hoping to walk around Petsmart, but for some reason their doors weren't open...I swore the sign said they opened at 8 and it was 8:20...? I love walking 'Nana through that store, she gets all the good smells and new sights...fun for us both. As I walked back to the van, I ran into Say and started gabbing and with the gabfest we ended up in her rig chattin' and snacking on some Muesli. J' had gone inside Wal-mart so when he came back we all decided to get ready to go into town for a little work and of course, some play.

It's 11:20 a.m.

We drove into Downtown Palm Springs to a little cafe' shop called Koffi. It's truly the neatest place...I don't know why more places aren't like this! Koffi is a cafe' like Starbucks, but outside among the other little shops around it, is the most beautiful courtyard. There are chairs & tables set-up throughout the entire place, there is lush green grass in the middle layered through flowers, plants, shady trees, palm trees, sculptures, fountains and walkways. It reminds me of my mom's backyard, I could spend a good part of the day here.

J' and Say went inside to work, so Savannah and I are just chillin' outside. This Palm Springs seems like a pretty easy going place. Yesterday and even today there are so many people out enjoying the day and their lives, it seems like a weekend...or everyone is on vacation...it's fantastic! Savannah is actually doing very well with how much is going on around here, there are people, other dogs...that are playing (god forbid!), loud noises, food. I'm pretty impressed with how she is handling all of it.

She's only barked at (and scared the crap out of) one lady...and even though she was probably just being nice, didn't seem to mind...said she (Savannah) was just doing her thing. Yep! I still get totally embarrassed though. Now, if only this chick would stop rolling these super loud trash cans by us...the whole scene would be Mellow Yellow baby and the Nana Bug could chill. I definitely think these people are doing exactly the right thing with their business...even though I haven't tried their pastries or cafe'...the vibe and environment is juuuuusssst right.

The day tried to consume us with work at Koffi but we weren't going to let that happen...we broke free of the work world and entered into the land of fun for the rest of the day. We first stopped at The Sandwich Spot, which has to be my most favorite sandwich I've ever had...no joke! I had this sandwich called The Volley & Serve: Hot turkey on Dutch Crunch bread (amazing), lettuce, tomato, Avocado, Cream Cheese, their secret sauce and this bomb sauce that's like a spicy ranch...I'm salivating just writing this, that's how Bomb! this sammie was...WOW!! Yeah, great sammie! After devouring our lunch we took a drive through town, Sayward pointing out some of her favorite spots to walk the dog and hike and places in general that she likes to hang out at. It was a great day and great to be able to spend some good time together.

With the weather being pretty nice...there's talk of a spa day tomorrow!

Blowin' in the Wind

Phew, what a past couple of days we have had! So you know I wasn't feeling very well...I don't really know what was going on with me. It kind of felt like I had a stomach bug on-top of  'my lady days' on-top of light food poisoning... to say the least every movement was awful, but after three and a half days of it, it's finally gone! Woo hoo!! We kept the bed down all day Saturday. It was a bit of an interesting day with the bed down since J' still had to work. At least he had the passenger chair to sit in...good thing he put that swivel on it last December.

Sunday I was feeling much better so we rolled the bed up, J' was a happy guy! We watched some football and just hung out. The weather had called for some big winds for the next few days and they sure did come through on that! I took Savannah on about an hour long walk, thinking it would be a nice change for both of us (with my icky feelings). The wind was blowing so hard, even MY hair was blowing all over the place, haha!

I had brought my ipod with me to jam to on my walk and the wind was blowing so strong it kept whipping them out of my ears...umm, OW! We walked down the main gravel road for a while. When we turned back I moved over to a new road they just put in, I guess they are going to put power lines in here. With my heel still healing it was a much nicer road to take, I didn't have all of these little rocks jabbing me in the heel...awww, relief!

 Plus, I really think the Bug likes to jump up and down on the dirt they moved over to the side...remember, she's a "Circus dog"...haha!

Monday (yesterday) Wayne came and picked us up at 9:30 a.m. We had made plans with him the day before to go run some errands...he's such a nice guy, checking on us and making sure we're okay. That's one of the great things we've run into on our journey, very loving and nice people. We thank you all for caring for us, even though we start out as strangers we always end up as family...so thank you again! So Wayne came and swooped us up about 9:30a.m...right on time! We rode further down the main gravel road (the opposite direction), I don't think the van would make it down there so it was cool to be able to see what was down there. We went to the dump first...Nana LOVES the dump, it smells soooo delish! haha gross

 We then took all the cool back and side roads over to Smith's Grocery. Wayne doesn't mess around, he knows all the back roads. It was fun to go on a little adventure although we were just going to the grocery store. Smith's is a real nice store, great ambiance! It is super clean, there's really no one in there, the people are nice and the prices really aren't that bad. Oh, Wayne gave us a little shoppers card too, for a discount...that saved us $9.00! Every bit counts!

Now that we know about Smith's, we probably won't be doing much grocery shopping at Wal-mart. This Wal-mart is actually not that bad, it reminds us a lot of the one back "home". It's really clean and there's never anyone in it...but it's nice to switch things up.

Wayne showed us where the Post Office was and then we headed over to an RV park on the South West side of town and refreshed our water...for FREE!!!!  Don't you love that word? I know we do!

The boys got a little wet while filling up some of the milk jugs... I laughed, probably harder then I should have...but it was funny! After all of our silly shenanigans, we ran a couple more errands with Wayne and headed back home. Thanks again Wayne, you are a blessing and such great company!

After errands we pretty much just got back in the van and did our thang! The wind was really bad, so there's nothing to really do but sit in the van. We can't drive anywhere right now, so we sit. We make up things to do, we talk about a lot of different things, we research lots of different things and then laugh at Savannah...haha. She has found a new spot in the van to lay. J' let her lay next to him the other day so she could see out of the window and "window hunt" and all of that good stuff. Well, now that's just her spot!

As long as she's by her daddy she's a happy girl. I swear if everyone in this world loved like Savannah loves J'...this would be such a beautiful, loving world...and a little crazy. She's a little cray cray over her daddy! haha

So today... Tuesday we still sit in the van. It's more windy today than the last two days...hopefully it'll pass by tomorrow. I'm very ready to be able to take my Bug on walks again and just be out of the van without feeling like you're in a tornado. The cold has also come with this wind, which is nice for sleeping and there aren't any flies right now... but c'mon man! So that leaves us only to laugh at Savannah...oh you know she likes it because it usually means food is involved! In this case...Peanut Butter!
